Fun fact: it’s possible to create responsive components without any media queries at all. Certainly, if we had container queries, those would be very useful for responsive design at the component level. But we don’t. Still, with or without container queries, we can do things to make our components surprisingly responsive. We’ll use concepts from…Details

WebRTC finally works on iOS home screen PWA apps! Here’s an Off-White inspired experiment to show off the camera. Say hello to the “CAMERA.” Link within.
If you aren’t aware, both iOS and Android allow users to add websites to their home screen sorta like a bookmark. If that website was built in a progressive way it really could feel like a native app. I was aware of this but never really pursued it because home screen apps were missing access to two features I love: the camera and the microphone. Well, you could just about imagine my surprise this weekend while hacking when I found out that Apple had finally added support for these features.
As a test, I revisited an experiment from 2018 called the “CAMERA.” This is a custom camera built as a web app which can label photos in the style of Virgil Abloh’s fashion brand Off-White. Namely, all caps bold Helvetica in quotes. This new version was built as a progressive web app so it really feels like a native camera app sitting on the user’s home screen. The labeling itself is powered by a Tensorflow object detection model which can detect 80 different classes of objects in realtime.
As a web developer, I find this update absolutely fascinating. The camera is one of the most powerful and user friendly marketing platforms we have. We now have the opportunity to build highly tailored mobile camera experiences using all of what the open web has to offer.
